My Review:
Knight of Wands creates an engrossing fantasy world that will captivate readers from the very beginning. World-building at its finest, I could not get enough of the setting and history behind it. Between the Hands of Tarot and the Great Families, I definitely developed a thirst for more.
I should probably note that I did not read Fall of Sky City, although - despite the likely spoilers - I may go back and do so now. Knight of Wands can absolutely be read as a stand-alone, and I definitely enjoyed it as one. There are very few downsides to this. The beginning of the book was a little slow, as a bit of a catch-up occurred, but the pacing quickly picked up. In addition, initially it was slightly daunting to keep up with all the characters. However, neither of these take much at all away from the reading experience. (Although, a reader's companion to the series would be pretty fantasic.)
I really enjoyed the characterization of Synn. Although I did not get to discover exactly what he was like in the previous book, his growth as a character was still clear throughout Knight of Wands. Like most excellent characters, Synn has to deal with a lot as the story progresses, but I think he handled his decisions well and true to character.
Synn also creates a great voice for the novel. The strong diction and clear personality really added to the reading experience as well as the relationship between reader and character. With a few minor exceptions, the pacing was excellent, and allows for the reader to easily become consumed with this new world.
I absolutely loved the imagery of Knight of Wands. An important part of a good novel is being able to thoroughly visualize the actions taking place. There was a lot of action in the novel, and having the breathtaking visuals both in the writing (and added by the occasional illustration) created a deeper understanding of the plot.
I really enjoyed reading the high concept adventure of Knight of Wands, and the themes it has to display. All around, a pretty good read.
